High Five For Daily Five!

January 27, 2012

Ever wonder how you can improve or how you can organize and manage your Daily Five routines more effectively in your classrooms???  This is an area that I struggled with, since the day I began Daily Five in my classroom…So, I came up with a few tools that I would like to share with all of you!! Of course, they are adapted from ‘The Daily Five’ by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser.

The first tool that I created was a quick start guide to Daily Five …

Daily Five Quick Start Guide

I tried to focus on the important areas of each choice. Key points such as modelling, Anchor Charts/ I-Charts, and other tips that would allow for all of your Firsties to become more independent during your Daily Five lessons…

I love using bright headers/posters to be displayed with my Anchor Charts/I-Charts. I believe that it is important for teachers to create your own Anchor Charts/I-Charts with your students. However, I like to have titles for everything that is displayed in my classroom…so, I adpated these posters.

Daily 5 Title Posters

Students need to know the urgency and why each choice is so important … that is why it is so important to display Why? posters around your Anchor Charts/I-Charts, as well…

Why? Listen to Reading

Why? Read to Self

Why? Read to Someone

Why? Work on Words

Why? Work on Writing

It is also very important to have a Daily Five Management Board, so that both you and your students know what choices have been made. I use little cards for each choice, that are placed in a pocket chart. Then the students can place their names where they want to go.We change this after each focus lesson, and before they go to their next choice.

I also have a Student Choice Card, that is cut apart and laminated for each child to use. They can check off their choices for the day, or number the choices that they will be completing for that Daily Five time frame. Easy Write On/ Wipe Off! They can keep these choice cards in their Daily Five Work Folders.

There is also a Student Choice Sheet, for students to record their Daily Five choices for the week. This is kept at the beginning of their Daily Five Work Folders.

Daily Five Management Board & Student Materials

I’m a little OCD when it comes to knowing what the students are working on, so I record where they have been  … I just so a little role call … when I can remember…

The Daily Five- Check In

I hope all of these little goodies help you organize and manage your Daily Five routines more effectively!!!
